A Stellar Dynamical Mass Measurement of the Black Hole in Ngc 3998 from Keck Adaptive Optics Observations

چکیده
We present a new stellar dynamical mass measurement of the black hole in the nearby, S0 galaxy NGC 3998. By combining laser guide star adaptive optics observations obtained with the OH-Suppressing Infrared Imaging Spectrograph on the Keck II telescope with long-slit spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck I telescope, we map out the stellar kinematics on both small spatial scales, well within the black hole sphere of influence, and on large scales. We find that the galaxy is rapidly rotating and exhibits a sharp central peak in the velocity dispersion. Using the kinematics and the stellar luminosity density derived from imaging observations, we construct three-integral, orbit-based, triaxial stellar dynamical models. We find the black hole has a mass of MBH = (8.1+2.0 −1.9)× 108 M⊙, with an I-band stellar mass-to-light ratio of M/L = 5.0+0.3 −0.4 M⊙/L⊙ (3σ uncertainties), and that the intrinsic shape of the galaxy is very round, but oblate. With the work presented here, NGC 3998 is now one of a very small number of galaxies for which both stellar and gas dynamical modeling have been used to measure the mass of the black hole. The stellar dynamical mass is nearly a factor of four larger than the previous gas dynamical black hole mass measurement. Given that this cross-check has so far only been attempted on a few galaxies with mixed results, carrying out similar studies in other objects is essential for quantifying the magnitude and distribution of the cosmic scatter in the black hole mass − host galaxy relations. Context. We present results from a kinematical study of the gas in the nucleus of the active S0 galaxy NGC 3998 obtained from archival HST/STIS long-slit spectra. Aims. We analyzed the emission lines profiles and derived the map of the gas velocity field. The observed velocity curves are consistent with gas in regular rotation around the galaxy’s center. Methods. By modeling the surface brightn...

The two-dimensional distribution and kinematics of the molecular, ionized, and highly ionized gas in the nuclear regions of Seyfert 1 galaxies have been measured using high spatial resolution (∼0.09) near-infrared spectroscopy from NIRSPEC with adaptive optics on the Keck telescope. Molecular hydrogen, H2, is detected in all nine Seyfert 1 galaxies and, in the majority of galaxies, has a spatia...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Utility of Dynamical Mass Estimators as Applied to Sgr A*
Recent studies of the black hole at the Galactic Center have suggested a mass of 4.36±0.07 million solar masses based on the orbit of S0-2; these estimates are nearly a factor of two greater than estimates based on velocity dispersions a decade ago. This study is the first to use new proper-motion measurements of the central 9” for the explicit purpose of identifying the sources of this discrep...
متن کاملThe supermassive black hole of FornaxA
The radio galaxy Fornax A (NGC 1316) is a prominent merger remnant in the outskirts of the Fornax cluster. Its giant radio lobes suggest the presence of a powerful AGN, and thus a central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Fornax A now seems to be in a transition state between active black hole growth and quiescence, as indicated by the strongly declined activity of the nucleus. Studying objects i...
متن کاملAn Intermediate-mass Black Hole in the Globular Cluster G1: Improved Significance from New Keck and Hubble Space Telescope Observations1
We present dynamical models for the massive globular cluster G1. The goal is to measure or place a significant upper limit on the mass of any central black hole. Whether or not globular clusters contain central massive black holes has important consequences for a variety of studies. We use new kinematic data obtained with Keck and new photometry from the Hubble Space Telescope. The Keck spectra...
